Kiribati, an Island Threatened by Climate Change
The Republic of Kiribati (a Pacific island nation) is the easternmost country in the world, and was the first to enter the new millennium. Will it also be the first to disappear because of climate change?
According to Greenpeace, two of the islands that make up Kiribati have already gone under the waves, and in early 2005 others were inundated by a high spring tide that washed away farmland, contaminated wells with saltwater, and flooded homes and a hospital.
